Google’s Project Sunroof Shows Nearly 80% of Roofs Are Sunny Enough for Solar Panels

The Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activities getting well-deserved attention for their good work.

Google’s Project Sunroof has been in the news recently thanks to a new expansion that has seen the company build 3-D models of rooftops in all 50 states. Top among the findings is that nearly 80% of all buildings the team modeled are “technically viable” for solar panels, meaning they catch enough rays each year to make generating electricity feasible. Read the full story in the MIT Technology Review and take a look at the post on Google’s blog.

We also want to congratulate the Earth Roofs in the Sahel project for winning the World Habitat Awards. Across five West African countries in the Sahel hundreds of local people are being trained to create vaulted roofs using sun-dried mud bricks. This technique replaces unsuitable materials often used for housing and has resulted in over 2,000 homes now being more affordable and comfortable. Well done!
