In Kolkata, Trash2Cash has developed an innovative solution to the city's solid waste problem that helps reduce emissions and therefore addresses climate change. Trash2Cash is an independent community enterprise led by people who live in slums, who are trained and paid to collect and recycle waste in urban areas.
Each month, slum residents collect and recycle 1000 kg of waste paper and compost 2000 kg of food waste. This reduces CO2-equivalent emissions by 520 metric tonnes each year.
Trash2Cash was a Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activity winner in 2014.
