Building resilient societies and economies will be key to coping with climate change. Many nations and communities are already doing this but far greater action and ambition will be needed to cost effectively manage the risks and impacts of extreme weather events now and into the future.

The UNFCCC Newsroom presents a new entry as part of the series of Climate Songs for Paris COP 21. The song "Climate Change Song" was submitted by the Ponai String Band, from Ahus Island, Papua-New-Guinea.

Listen to Climate Change Song

This song is part of a Climate Change Adaptations AusAID-funded project “Building the resilience of communities and their ecosystems to the impacts of climate change in the Pacific” which was implemented by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Manus Island, Papua New Guinea.

The objective of this Project is to build the resilience of the coastal communities and their ecosystems to the impacts of climate change. Therefore, the song is about how climate change has impacted the livelihood of such islanders - it aims at raising awareness while calling for the Government of Manus and the International Community to accept the moral responsibilities and take adaptive and mitigation measures to channel funds to help the people in the Pacific.

Ahus Island in Manus Province of Papua New Guinea is a very low-lying sand island severely affected by climate change impacts. Sand erosion is shrinking their island, their freshwater wells are becoming brackish and changing weather patterns and oceanic currents are making finding fish difficult.

The video clip was filmed and edited by Kat Gawlik from the For Greenies, with support fron AusAID, The Nature Conservancy and WWF.

Climate Change Song- Song Text

In the world today there is a big problem
of climate change,
In the world today there is a big problem
of climate change

It is a big concern for the government, non-government organisations and grassroots movements,
Weather patterns are changing and the sea is rising,
sea level rise will affect men and women and their land

There is one major cause of climate change-
greed and selfishness cause climate change,
big factories contribute to climate change

We ask the national government create the policies and guidelines to limit human activities,
and therefore look after the people of Manus and of course Ahus Island people too!

There is one major cause of climate change-
greed and selfishness cause climate change,
big factories contribute to climate change...

Send us your Climate Song for Paris COP21

Are you an amateur or professional singer, and do you care deeply about climate change? Then be part of the global movement in support of a meanginful new universal climate change agreement to be concluded in Paris in December (COP 21/CMP 11). Send us your climate songs to newsroom@unfccc.int so we can spread the word in the run-up to the meeting.

The song would need to be already posted online in a sharable format so that we can link to it (as a sound file or video or embedded on a website) and we would ask for a short paragraph about how it was made and what the song means for you.
